Summary:The Alfred E. Aiken Papers consist of eight original letters he wrote from 1885 to 1890 to his sister, Sabra Jane "Jennie" Aiken who was living in Frewsburg, New York. The letters were sent from Poplar Creek and Dawson County, Montana, and Fort Buford, North Dakota, and describe his impressions of the country, the military garrison at Poplar Creek, members of the tribes on the nearby reservation, incidents of ranch life, and family news. The letters are supplemented by a biographical essay, "A Cowpuncher's Prairie Romance," written by Aiken's granddaughter, Evelyn J. Aiken Jones.

Summary:The Elanor Roberts Baltzell Letter was written to Mrs. H. R. Wahoske of Great Falls, Montana by Eleanor R. Baltzell, on July 9, 1924 after reading the proceedings of the Montana Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Great Falls. The letter discusses about her father, Thomas P. Roberts and his work with the Northern Pacific Railroad when the line was being surveyed in Montana during 1872 and 1873. The letter also points out paginated references to his work appearing in Olin D. Wheeler’s The Trail of Lewis and Clark, 1804-1904 (New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1904).

Fort Peck Boarding School Roster

Summary:The Fort Peck Boarding School Roster is a bound volume recording the student's age, Anglicized name, his parents family name in both English and a phonetic rendering of native languages, tribal affiliation, and the date of enrollment at the school. The entries date from July 31, 1888 to September 18, 1892, the date when the second fire struck the facility. Other information recorded in the volume are the names of students granted vacation leave at various times and, occasionally, additional notations such as the names of runaways. Names of students enrolled at other reservation schools are also represented in this roster.

Henry O. Fortin Scrapbook

Summary:The Henry O. Fortin Scrapbook contains dance cards, theater programs, sporting event programs, ticket stubs, "spirit" ribbons, and objects such as a beanie, pocket handkerchiefs, and a hat cord, most collected by him while he was a student at Montana State College. Several pages of signatures and brief testimonial comments from fellow USGS workers from 1926 through 1930 are included. The scrapbook also contains a few letters, including one personally signed by then U.S. Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover and another by U.S. Congressman John M. Evans. A student essay based Fortin's personal experience growing up in rural Montana, "The Hunt," is pasted into the scrapbook.

Summary:The Henry F. Keyes Photograph Album and Diary contains snapshots and journal entries taken by Keyes taken during a hike through southwest Montana. The album contains images of the steamship North Land, Mackinac Island, the North Dakota Badlands, Bozeman, Bridger Canyon, Gallatin Canyon, Lone Peak, Virginia City, the Red Rock valley, Sawtell's Ranch at Henry's Lake, Upper Geyser Basin, and Lake Yellowstone. People pictured are Keyes and his companions, Edward C. Alderson, Jack Bean, and Felix G. White. The diary entries make note of the scenery, the content of his meals, and even the time of day when certain described events occurred. Many of his fellow students are mentioned, and geographic details and wildlife sightings recorded.

Primarily obituaries, the articles were clipped from the Bozeman Daily Chronicle and Great Falls Tribune daily, the Sunday editions of the Billings Gazette, Montana Standard, Missoulian and Helena Independent, and the weekly Three Forks Herald Tribune, Miles City Star, High Country Independent Press and Madisonian. Other newspapers may be represented depending on the individual subject. Some of the folders contain news stories about the individuals and other material in addition to the obituaries.
