Also present are three of Bennett's books, which provide information on his beliefs, the Bennett family, his business interests, and his life in Washington: Faith and Freedom (1950), Why I Am A Mormon (1958), and John F. | Summary: | Jonathan Bourne was a politician in Oregon at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1885 and 1897, he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, and was elected U. S. Senator in 1906. Considered a progressive, Bourne was a founder and president of the National Progressive Republican League in 1911 and organized the Republican Publicity Association in 1912. Most of the collection consists of U. S. Senate correspondence and case files. The Senate case files relate to topics which arose during Bourne's term of office, ranging from problems with the apple crop, through management of Indian affairs and reservations, to construction of public buildings, bridges and other projects in Oregon. There are folders on such issues as child labor, conservation, Chinese exclusion, and land law. |

| Summary: | Lee Metcalf (1911-1978) served as U.S. Congressman from Montana from 1952 to 1961 and as U.S. Senator from 1961 until his death in 1978. The papers reflect Metcalf's wide range of interests, but especially reflect his involvement in public utilities regulation and protection of the natural environment. Over half of the collection consists of general correspondence (1951-1978) arranged alphabetically by subject and government agency. Name index card files of correspondents are available, one of which is organized alphabetically, another is arranged by location in Montana. Additionally in the collection are series for bills, printed materials, campaign materials, speeches and writings, voting records, and clippings. The Vic Reinemer Subgroup consists of general correspondence, outgoing correspondence, and subject files generated by Reinemer in his capacity as Metcalf's executive secretary and as staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Banking, Management, and Expenditures. |

Metcalf (1911-1978) served as a Montana state congressman, state assistant attorney general, World War II soldier and military prosecutor, and a Montana Supreme Court Associate Justice between 1937 and 1952. From 1952 to 1961, he held Montana’s First District U.S. Representatives seat. In 1961, he became a U.S. Senator, serving until his death on January 12, 1978. The photographs in this collection depict all aspects of Metcalf’s life and service in public office, including images of his time in various Montana government offices, as a U.S. Congressman, and as a U.S. Senator. Images from Metcalf’s personal life are included, showing Metcalf’s ancestors from Maine and Massachusetts; his early life and school days; his wife Donna and their son Jerry; Metcalf’s parents and their family; and scenes from his regular life outside of public office. The bulk of the collection is focused on the later part of his term as a U.S. Congressman, through his many years in the U.S. Senate, from 1958 to 1977. Originally housed within Metcalf’s congressional offices, many of these images were used by Metcalf and his office staff from 1953 to 1978 for various publications, television and film recordings, congressional hearing exhibits, newspaper articles, and election and publicity materials. |
