Summary:Henry Elling was a banker in Virginia City, Montana, with extensive mercantile, mining, and ranching interests. Collection consists primarily of incoming correspondence (1864-1881). There is one outgoing letterpress book (1892), general ledgers (1873-1901), journals (1873-1901), miscellaneous financial records (1872-1880), and a property abstract volume (ca. 1890). There are subgroups for Elling, Knight, and Company; Montanian Publishing Company; Silver Spring Grist Mill; William Elling; and Mary B. Elling.

Summary:The Gilbert Brewing Company, was a Virginia City, Montana, brewery owned initially by Henry S. Gilbert and Christopher Richter, and later by Valentine Gilbert. Records include a notebooks of beer sold (1900-1918); daybooks (1864-1901); Internal Revenue reporting registers (1869-1916); a journal (1866-1869); ledgers (1866-1889, 1904); malt accounts (1882-1904); and a bond for the purchase of the Big Chief mining claim (1886).

Summary:The Montana Council of Defense was established during World War I to coordinate county war efforts. It also investigated cases of alleged disloyal activities. Records (1916-1921) include minutes, correspondence, subject files, testimony and exhibits for hearings and special investigations, membership lists, and correspondence of various county councils of defense. Correspondence has been digitized and is available on the Montana Memory Project.

Reinig Company Records

Summary:The Reinig Company, a Helena, Montana, coffee store and general grocery, was founded by Michael Reinig, a Bavarian emigre in 1865. Reinig also owned a stable, boarding house, and a saloon. The Company operated until 1958. This collection (1865-1948) consists of financial and legal records for the various businesses owned by the Reinig family. Subgroups include M. Reinig / Reinig Company (1874-1943); Brooklyn Bridge Mining and Milling Co. (1907-1909); Ehrenberg and Staff / Ehrenberg and Reinig / Montana Cycle Co.(1894-1896); Harmonia Gesang Verein (1873-1877); Helena Cab Co. / Merchants Delivery (1908-1923); and various family members.
