Montana Industrial And Energy Minerals Bureau Records

Summary: In 1971 the Montana Coal and Uranium Bureau was established as part of the Reclamation Division of the Department of State Lands. In 1996 it was changed to the Industrial and Energy Minerals Bureau of the Department of Environmental Quality. These Records (1966-2002) consist of subject files on coal and uranium mining and oil extraction companies operating in Montana. Files include correspondence; bond releases; prospecting and operating permit files; annual, inspection, and monitering reports, reports re, violations, comprehensive mine plans, reclamation planning, and research, as well as general statistical reports re coal production from 1968-1994. Also included are surveys, maps, contracts, environmental impact statements, and other date re vegetation, geology, air quality, etc. The bulk of the records are arranged alphabetically by company name. However a separate subgroup of permit files of the Montana Bureau of Mining and Geology (MBMG) are organized by county.

Summary:Founded in 1961, Physicians for Social Responsibility made its mark by documenting the presence of highly radioactive waste products from atmospheric nuclear testing that led to the Limited Nuclear Test Ban treaty. Their work for the environment and public health continued, focusing on issues such as ending the nuclear arms race, global climate change and toxic pollution, the role of oil and diplomacy in conflict, research and development of renewable energy technologies, decreasing U.S. oil consumption, and increasing conservation and energy efficiency. The group created a local Portland, OR chapter in 1980. This collection includes administrative files, campaign information, various publications and books, and audiovisual materials.
