Bull Nose letters

Summary:Five letters or notes of reference from various Crow Agency Indian agents either vouching for Bull Nose, Crow chief, or granting him permission for an activity such as hunting off the reservation; a note vouching for the good character of Bull Nose which is signed by three Indian men from different tribes; and a letter (1890) addressed to "My dear friend" with the heading Pine Ridge Agency.

Campbell Farming Corporation records

Summary: The Campbell Farming Corporation, founded by Thomas D. Campbell in 1918, was a large wheat farming operation on and near the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. Records include general correspondence (1918-1970), financial records (1922-1928), legal documents (1920s-1970s), subject files (1920-1974, undated), miscellany, maps, and printed materials. Collection includes 34 volumes and one oversize box.

Lee Metcalf Photograph Collection

Summary:Lee W. Metcalf (1911-1978) served as a Montana state congressman, state assistant attorney general, World War II soldier and military prosecutor, and a Montana Supreme Court Associate Justice between 1937 and 1952. From 1952 to 1961, he held Montana’s First District U.S. Representatives seat. In 1961, he became a U.S. Senator, serving until his death on January 12, 1978. The photographs in this collection depict all aspects of Metcalf’s life and service in public office, including images of his time in various Montana government offices, as a U.S. Congressman, and as a U.S. Senator. Images from Metcalf’s personal life are included, showing Metcalf’s ancestors from Maine and Massachusetts; his early life and school days; his wife Donna and their son Jerry; Metcalf’s parents and their family; and scenes from his regular life outside of public office. The bulk of the collection is focused on the later part of his term as a U.S. Congressman, through his many years in the U.S. Senate, from 1958 to 1977. Originally housed within Metcalf’s congressional offices, many of these images were used by Metcalf and his office staff from 1953 to 1978 for various publications, television and film recordings, congressional hearing exhibits, newspaper articles, and election and publicity materials.

Miller collection consists of original papers collected or created by Fred Miller as well as members of his family during his time spent living in the Rosebud County region of Montana and interacting with members of the Crow Tribe. The majority of collection consists of the Nancy O'Connor research collection highlighting the life and career of Fred Miller as well as exhibits created using his photography.

Summary:Records (1867-1889) of the territorial executive offices consist of correspondence; financial records; oaths of office; treaties with the Bannack, Shoshone, and Sheepeater Indian tribes; reports of the insane asylum, the superintendent of schools, and various territorial agencies; and miscellany. Records (1889-1975) of the state executive offices consist of correspondence; departmental regulations; financial records; legal documents, including construction contracts for the state capitol and various state institutions, township descriptions; reports and inventories of state agencies; and miscellany, including automobile registration registers, a petition of John W. Darnell for release from a mental hospital, railroad licenses, and other matters. There are also subgroups for the Building and Loan Commission, the Capitol Site Commission, the Board of Charities and Reform, the Efficiency and Trade Commission, the State Board of Examiners, the Fish and Game Commission, the Law Library, the Railroad Commission, the Department of Weights and Measures, and the Board of World's Fair Managers.
