Charles Kuhlman Research Collection : Battle of the Little Big Horn

Summary:Charles Kuhlman (1873-1959) was a sugar beet farmer and amateur historian from Billings, Montana. Papers consist of general correspondence (1936-1959) concerning his research into the Battle of the Little Big Horn (1876) and George Armstrong Custer; drafts of his writings; miscellany; and clippings. Many of the letters also reflect his farming business and his interest in foreign policy.

Lee Metcalf Papers

Summary: Lee Metcalf (1911-1978) served as U.S. Congressman from Montana from 1952 to 1961 and as U.S. Senator from 1961 until his death in 1978. The papers reflect Metcalf's wide range of interests, but especially reflect his involvement in public utilities regulation and protection of the natural environment. Over half of the collection consists of general correspondence (1951-1978) arranged alphabetically by subject and government agency. Name index card files of correspondents are available, one of which is organized alphabetically, another is arranged by location in Montana. Additionally in the collection are series for bills, printed materials, campaign materials, speeches and writings, voting records, and clippings. The Vic Reinemer Subgroup consists of general correspondence, outgoing correspondence, and subject files generated by Reinemer in his capacity as Metcalf's executive secretary and as staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Banking, Management, and Expenditures.

William Scallon papers

Summary:William Scallon (1855-1951) was a Helena, Montana, attorney. His papers (1876-1951) include correspondence; court papers and legal documents; reports and print material; and speeches and writings. The correspondence (1882-1951) includes typed transcripts of personal letters concerning Irish independence, the Sino-Japanese War, and other topics. The court papers (1902-1937) consist primarily of case files in a suit of the United States against the Standard Oil Company to regain title to lands in California's Naval Oil Reserve.
