Summary:Oscar Baarson was assistant superintendent of the Anaconda Company's East Helena, Montana, plant; Helena City Engineer; district manager for the U.S. War Production Board during World War II, engineer for the State Examiners Office and Lewis and Clark County surveyor. This collection consists of Oscar Baarson's files (1925-1950) concerning his work with the Anaconda Company, the City of Helena, and the State Examiners Office; and a small group of personal papers relating to Baarson's family, private engineering business, and Masonic activities.

Summary:The Montana Historical Society’s Research Historian position was established in 1993 to “provide verification, research, writing, and editing for projects and publications by the Society and cooperating agencies.” Records consists primarily of general correspondence (1989-2006) and subject files (1979-2006). Together, the two series--between which there is considerable overlap--cover the wide range of the work of the office.

Summary: The Montana State Controller served as the state's accountant and ex-officio purchasing agent. Records (1958-1971) consist of correspondence with state agencies; interoffice correspondence; subject files concerning the Statewide Budgeting and Accounting System (SBAS), the Centennial Train, Governor's office remodeling, building codes, state institutions, etc.

Summary:The Montana State Board of Examiners was responsible for settling claims for expenditures of state agencies and claims against the state. Records (1889-1983) consist of correspondence, account ledgers and journals, legal documents, minutes, reports, and subject files documenting claims against the state. In addition there are records for Korean War honorariums, and Vietnam veterans bonus claims. [Artifacts, maps, printed material, and photographs have been transferred to the Museum, Library, and Photograph Archives respectively.]

Summary:The Montana State Board of Examiners served ex officio as the Montana State Capitol Commission to oversee the planning and construction of the state capitol building. Records consist of correspondence (1895-1903); minutes (1895-1902, 1909-1912); an agreement (1909) for the construction of new wings; a history and description (1917) of the building; a listing and description of the paintings in the building; and a visitors' register (July 4, 1902) for the dedication ceremony.
