Summary:John Commingers Ainsworth (1822-1893) was the major founder of the Oregon Steam Navigation (OSN) Company, the most powerful transportation monopoly in the Pacific Northwest. Ainsworth was also involved in a number of other ventures, including the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and various gold, silver and coal mining operations. The John Commingers Ainsworth Papers contain Ainsworth's diaries, autobiography, personal correspondence, photographs, and the business records of the Oregon Central Railroad, Oregon Steam Navigation Company, Northern Pacific Railroad Company, and various mining, building and shipping enterprises.

Summary:Harry A. Herzog (1893-) was an architect in practice in Portland, Oregon, in the firm of Bennes & Herzog. Collection comprises architectural tracings, renderings, specifications and photographs for 27 commercial and residential architecture projects in the Portland, Oregon area by American architect Harry Albert Herzog.

Robert Aubrey Miller papers

Summary:Robert Aubrey Miller (1854-1941) graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon in 1878, and began a law practice in Jacksonville, Oregon, served in the Oregon House of Representatives, and was as an aide to Governor Sylvester Pennoyer. The collection contains correspondence, letterpress volumes, a diary, proceedings of the Jacksonville District Pomona Grange (1876-1879), a Willamette University memorandum book, scrapbooks of clippings, speeches, Southern Oregon District Fair material, books of poems, excerpts from The Hesperian, a literary magazine edited by Miller, and photographs.

Edward and William Partridge photographs

Summary:Edward J. Partridge (1856-1891) and his brother, William H. Partridge (1860-1939), were important photographers active in Oregon, Alaska, and San Francisco. The collection consists of seventy images, primarily vintage prints. Other Partridge images appear in the Day collection and the Angelus Studio collection.

Hazard Stevens papers

Summary:Hazard Stevens was born in Rhode Island in 1842 and educated in New England. His father, Major General Isaac I. Stevens was governor of the Washington Territory. Hazard served in the Indian war from 1855-1856 and later in the Civil War. Thereafter, he moved to Washington territory where he worked for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company, then as Internal Revenue collector form the Territory and eventually became a lawyer and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Stevens, along with P. B. Van Trump, climbed what would later be named Mt. Rainier in the first recorded ascent to the summit. By the 1880s Stevens returned to the east coast, building a home in Dorchester Massachusetts. He became active in regional politics, including an unsuccessful run for congress. This collection contains correspondence, documents, diaries and ephemera related to Stevens life, professional pursuits and business matters. It also contains considerable information dealing with the life of his father and the history of his family, reaching back to the 19th century.

The papers include correspondence, a letterpress copybook, legal papers, a manuscript, photographs, addresses and publications by Wilson as well as personal correspondence of Joseph G. Wilson, and certificates of Elizabeth Millar Wilson.
