Clarice Ashworth Francone medical illustration collection

Summary:Clarice Ashworth Francone studied at the Art Insitutute of Chicago and later studied medical illustration under Max Broedel at Johns Hopkins University. Ashworth moved to Oregon in 1929 and worked as a freelance illustrator, and in 1936, started working part-time at the University of Oregon Medical School, eventually becoming the head of the Medical Illustration Department. She is best known for her work on the anatomy and physiology textbook, Structure and Function of Man, which she co-authored with Dr. Stanley Jacob, professor of surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School. The Francone Papers consist of preliminary sketches in pencil, finished drawings, books, published drawings and proofs of works by other medical illustrators, photographs, and some personal items.

Summary:This collection contains materials that relate to Ralph W. Barnes' fourteen year career as a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. Barnes reported in Europe from 1926 to 1940, and was stationed in Benito Mussolini's Italy, Joseph Stalin's Russia, and Adolf Hitler's Germany. The collection includes items related to Barnes' career as well as his personal life. Correspondence, journals, and scrapbooks created by his wife, Esther Barnes are also included. The majority of Barnes' published stories are documented in scrapbooks created by his father, E.T. Barnes. A notable item in this collection is a letter from Joseph Stalin to Barnes, written in 1933.

Summary:Dr. Robert S. Dow established the first EEG laboratory in the Pacific Northwest and the first neurology practice in Oregon. He served as the Head of the Department of Neurology at Good Samaritan Hospital where he developed a treatment for epilepsy through electrical stimulation to the cerebellum. This collection was assembled by Casey Bush during the course of his research into writing Dow's biography. Highlights include Dow's notes and writings on the history of medical education and neurological research, as well as his presentation on the rare neurodegenerative disorder, kuru, and his experimental research on the relationship between cobalt, epilepsy, and the cerebellum.

Edwards (1929-2006) have donated a variety of materials pertaining to their careers and longstanding ties with the Medical School. Lowell Edwards was internationally famous for his part in the invention of the Starr-Edwards Heart Valve. His son Miles graduated from UOMS (1956) and made a career in Pulmonary Medicine there, including department head (1970-83). After retiring in 1991 he made a second career as a medical ethicist at the Center for Ethics in Health Care.

He worked on the Oregonian and the Columbian, edited the Oregon Grange Bulletin, and edited and published Better Fruit Magazine. Collection consists of professional correspondence; manuscripts of articles, radio scripts, and speeches; published material by and about Milliman; and issues, 1935-1945, of Farm, Home and Garden, a Sunday supplement of the Oregonian, as well as photographs.

Esther Pohl Lovejoy papers

Summary:Esther Clayson Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967) was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1894, served as Portland's City Health Officer and with the Red Cross during World War I, led the American Women's Hospital Service, and helped found and served as the first president of the Medical Women's International Association. She was also a prolific writer. This collections documents Dr. Lovejoy's prominent role in advancing the work of women in medicine, as well as her leadership of transnational medical and humanitarian relief organizations. Furthermore, it contains her manuscripts, correspondence, notebooks, and photographs.

Dr. Miller founded the North Pacific College of Dentistry in 1898. As president, he gave North Pacific College of Dentistry to the State of Oregon in 1945. He died, December 20, 1947, at his new home, Newport, Oregon. The collection consists of personal papers and photographs and professional documents from Herbert Miller's career as an early dentist in the Pacific Northwest.

Summary:The Multnomah County - Division of Public Health Collection contains two boxes. Box 1 consists of five publications: The Oregon Public Health Association: A Quarter Century of Progress (1969), The History of Nursing: An Index to the Microfiche Collection (1983), The Medical Clinics of North America - Syphilis and Other Venereal Diseases. Volume 48 (1964), From Henry Street to Oregon - Celebrating 100 Years of Public Health Nursing (1993) and Annual Report: Multnomah County Department of Medical Services, Division of Public Health (1967 - 1968). Also contained in Box 1 are four 8.5 x 10 inch photographs of County affiliates from the early to mid 1960s. Box 2 contains two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings pertaining to public health services from the 1950's and 1960's, along with Multnomah County invitations to an event (1956) and historical notes about Edgefield Gardens & Winery (circa 1990). Through the 20th century, the Division of Public Health grew in size to tackle issues such as cancer, smallpox, polio and venereal diseases. By 1955, there were more specified programs within the Division aimed towards child/school health, vitals statistics and mental health. The Division of Public Health eventually transitioned into sub-programs and clinics with the Health Department of Multnomah County. The bulk of this collection highlights ephemera from the Division of Public Health from 1940 - 1968.

The Program's main output was the formation of the Oregon Cancer Data Program, which served as a centralized tumor registry for roughly 40 hospitals. These records document the planning of the cancer registry in the 1970s and early 1980s. Summary:The People's Institute was organized in 1904 to improve living conditions for the women and children in the northern end of Portland. The impetus for the Institute was a report by Valentine Prichard, supervisor of the public school kindergartens and principal of a training school for kindergarten teachers. This report, given in 1902 to Dr. Edgar P. Hill, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, along with Caroline Ladd and her daughter Helen Ladd Corbett, described the deplorable conditions of the women and children in north Portland Unable to provide even the bare necessities for their children, single mothers and their offspring lived in dark, unkempt rooming houses and tenements. Children, surrounded by immorality, often turned to crime, growing up idle and becoming a menace to society. Miss Prichard and a staff of workers visited homes to establish the needs of the women and children and to decide what could be done to help them and to establish the aims of the organization. The collection consists of fifty-two black and white glass lantern slides, ca. 1907-1909, illustrating the activities of the People's Institute and Portland Free Dispensary.

Summary:Started in 1904 by Valentine Prichard and a number of interested parties, the People's Institute grew over the years to provide services to the poor and those unable to pay for medical services. in 1910, members of the University of Oregon Medical School were appointed trustees and assigned fourteen staff to the dispensary. In 1931, after 24 years of operation, the People's Institute and Free Dispensary was re-deployed as the Outpatient Clinic and fully under the Medical School. This collection consists of minutes from the Board of Directors covering the years 1919 - 1930.

Summary:Laurence Selling (1882-1964) was a neurologist and lecturer, he was the Clinical Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department at the University of Oregon Medical School (UOMS), enlisted with the UOMS Unit in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for World War I, and one of the founders of the downtown Portland Clinic. The Laurence Selling first 100 cases collection contains index cards with patient information and diagnoses. The handwritten cards are from patients Dr. Selling took in between 1912 and 1913, when he was first starting his career as a neurologist and medical practitioner after earning his graduate degree.

Summary:Dr. John BeVier White was born in Shelby, OH, ca. 1898. By 1917, he had enrolled at Stanford University but left school to serve in World War I. After his discharge, he came to Portland to attend Reed College. He received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1927 and completed his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital before entering private practice in 1928. In 1940, he joined the Army and served as regimental surgeon for the 41st Division. He received the Silver Star for valor at Buna-Gona (when he removed shrapnel from his own knee so he could return to action). He remained with the Army until his retirement in 1959. He died in November 1972.

Summary:Willamette University began medical lectures in Salem in 1867. Oregon Medical College was incorporated in Portland in 1878; the founders of this institution then convinced Willamette to relocate their medical department to Portland, and unincorporated the Medical College in the same year. Willamette's medical courses continued on in Portland until 1895 when they returned to Salem, but in 1913, the department was discontinued and absorbed by the University of Oregon Medical School, which had been started by former Willamette faculty, in Portland, in 1887. This collection consists of two handwritten, leather-bound volumes with minutes and other records.
