Burton/Lake/Garton family papers

Summary:John James Burton, the progenitor of the Burton/Lake/Garton families, was an Oregon pioneer, establishing a farm on his donation land claim in Yamhill in 1844. Although the collection contains family papers of the Burton/Lake/Garton families, the collection will be of particular interest to scholars of Asian immigration in the West, and the work of Kate Burton Lake and Margaret Lake Garton to help Chinese and Japanese girls and young women through their work in the Methodist Episcopal Church's Oriental Home in San Francisco from ca. 1896-1903, and the Portland Industrial Home in Portland, Oregon from ca. 1913-1920. The collection contains correspondence, reports, newspaper articles, ephemera, artifacts, and photographs that reflect the Christian missionary work of Kate Burton Lake and her daughter Margaret Lake Garton; and the family life of the Burton/Lake/Garton families.

Summary:David Harvey (D.H.) and Mary (Minnie) Shelton Churchill lived and ranched near Ulm, Montana from 1875-1893. When D.H. died, Mary and their four children struggled to maintain the ranch, but the Panic of 1893 foreclosed banks and limited the resources available to them. The family sold the ranch and eventually moved first to Spokane, Washington, then Vancouver, Washington and finally to Portland, Oregon. The collection includes photographs of friends and family members, their ranch near Ulm, Montana, other residences, including those in Washington and Oregon, cities and towns in Montana, Oregon, and Washington, harness racing and racing horses, navy boats, ships and sailors, women and children.

Summary:The Ivan Collins papers, 1903-1971, document research, publication and exhibition activities pertaining to Collins's studies, construction and models of horse-drawn vehicles. The buk of the collection dates from the period from about 1940 to 1971 and includes correspondence between Collins and the other wagon research experts in the United States. Numerous newspaper and magazine clippings reflect Collins's obsession with his topic. Of particular historical interest is both the scale plans of his wagons, which provide rare construction details, and the journals, notes and sketches which document how Collins located examples to work from and how he learned to construct historically accurate models.
