David DeMuth Photographs

Summary:The DeMuth Photographs are mostly images of the construction of the Hebgen Dam on the Madison River, taken by DeMuth prior to his death in 1913. A few images show DeMuth as a graduating student, a young man, and in the construction camp on the upper Madison River, and three images show the capture of young elk calves in winter by DeMuth and an unidentified companion. The construction pictures include images of the workmen's camp, the sawmill producing cut timbers for concrete forms and a water diversion tunnel, construction activity in winter and summer, and both steam and horse-powered earth moving equipment.

Summary:The Mary Hunter Doane Papers consist of letters, speeches, a reminiscence, photographs, and other miscellaneous items pertaining to her life with her husband, Captain Gustavus Cheyney Doane, and her years of widowhood following his 1892 death. Materials include: extensive correspondence between Mary and Gustavus, especially voluminous during the summer of 1886 during the final campaign against Geronimo when the captain was stationed in Arizona; letters from other Doane family members and friends to Mary Doane; a handwritten reminiscence of Susan C. Hunter regarding the Hunter family's journey to Montana Territory and early residence in Virginia City, Helena, and Bozeman; speech notes from Mary Doane pertaining to her experiences and incidents of early frontier Army life; legal and financial documents; memorabilia; printed items; photographs, particularly of Fort Assiniboine, Montana Territory, circa 1882.

Hedges Papers consist of essays he wrote on a variety of historical topics which were intended for eventual publication, miscellaneous documents including copied letters from Cornelius Hedges and his son, Cornelius "Toby" Hedges, newspaper clippings of obituaries and other events pertaining to the Hedges family, and photographs. Topics include: sheep herding; pioneer encounters with bears, rattlesnakes, and coyotes; Montana Native Americans; extreme weather conditions; religion; Montana politics.

Wallis Huidekoper Collection

Summary:The Wallis Huidekoper Collection consists a selection of letters exchanged between Dr. Merrill G. Burlingame and Wallis Huidekoper regarding the editing of an oral history interview conducted in 1954, a 1929 letter from Edward Douglas Branch thanking Huidekoper for his favorable comments on The Hunting of the Buffalo (New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1929) and a 1938 letter from Martin S. Garretson, again thanking Huidekoper for favorable comments on his book, The American Bison (New York: New York Zoological Society, 1938). Also included are edited versions of an oral history interview with Huidekoper conducted by Elizabeth DeFrate and Merrill G. Burlingame on July 26, 1954 and transcribed from an audio tape, a typed bibliography of Huidekoper's articles, along with two original manuscripts he wrote concerning artist Charles M. Russell has been placed in a separate folder. Other materials include printed brochures and pamphlets written by or pertaining to Huidekoper' father, Henry Shippen Huidekoper and newspaper clippings pertaining to historic sites in the Germantown, Pennsylvania area, Wallis Huidekoper, Theodore Roosevelt, and ranching in North Dakota and Montana. Six photographs of North Dakota badlands residents circa 1880s and the Huidekoper ranch near Big Timber, Montana, circa 1956, complete the collection.

Jeffers Family Collection

Summary:The Jeffers Family Collection includes transcriptions or photocopies of diaries, ledgers, correspondence, interviews, historical essays and reminiscences related to the Jeffers, Ennis and Chowning families of Madison County, Montana. Of particular interest for livestock and grazing history are the nomination documents and associated materials for Myron Jeffers membership in the Cowboy Hall of Fame, including a transcript of his 1871 cattle drive diary. Also contributing to this area of interest are the record books of Charles W. Chowning of the Montana Cattle Company. The balance of the collection includes: a history of the Madison Valley Women's Club; papers of the Fairweather Pioneer Society of Madison County with minutes, financial records and membership roles and several histories; some financial records and clippings about the Trinity Episcopal Church, Jeffers MT and Trinity Guild; and a ledger of the Ennis Storage and Freighting has been transcribed. A scrapbook of clippings of articles on Montana history and one typed article by Judge Lew L. Callaway written in 1923-34 and a booklet of a news series in the Butte Miner by Frank D. (Sand Bar) Brown in 1927 collected by Winifred Jeffers are present. There are also five photographs and negatives of family members.

Henry F. Keyes Photograph Album and Diary

Summary:The Henry F. Keyes Photograph Album and Diary contains snapshots and journal entries taken by Keyes taken during a hike through southwest Montana. The album contains images of the steamship North Land, Mackinac Island, the North Dakota Badlands, Bozeman, Bridger Canyon, Gallatin Canyon, Lone Peak, Virginia City, the Red Rock valley, Sawtell's Ranch at Henry's Lake, Upper Geyser Basin, and Lake Yellowstone. People pictured are Keyes and his companions, Edward C. Alderson, Jack Bean, and Felix G. White. The diary entries make note of the scenery, the content of his meals, and even the time of day when certain described events occurred. Many of his fellow students are mentioned, and geographic details and wildlife sightings recorded.

Summary:The Nick Lyons Ephemera Collection includes the corporate history of the firm represented by the by-laws, assorted minutes, contracts and agreements with authors, business plans, financial papers and investors and publisher agreements. Original editorial manuscripts of books published by Lyons Press and bound advance uncorrected proofs and galley prints, a full set of autographed catalogs, promotional materials and company memos are included. Also received were over 320 subject files for prominent authors and artists. In addition, the collection includes: numerous original rough drafts, with notes and handwritten editorial notations, of articles and columns written by Nick Lyons. Also contained in the collection are original art works, photographs, and personal memorabilia.

Summary:The Nick Lyons collection includes the corporate documents of Nick Lyons Books, Lyons and Burford, and Lyons Press in the form of legal documents, correspondence, contracts, and proposals. Original editorial manuscripts and galleys of books published by Lyons Press are included as well as assorted Lyons catalogs. In addition, this collection includes original rough drafts, with notes and hand written editorial notations, of books, articles, and columns written by Nick Lyons for publications including Fly Fisherman Magazine, Field and Stream, and the New York Times. Also contained in the collection are ephemera, photographs, and artwork.

Summary:The essay Missouri to Montana in a Covered Wagon 1898 about 1965 Millie Talboys was prepared by Estelle C. Laughlin. The sketch describes the Stine family's decision to leave Missouri for Montana and incidents occurring along the way including interactions with photographer C. O. Corey and members of the Crow Indian tribe, and fording the Yellowstone River. Other parts of the reminiscence describe living in early Bozeman, Garneill, and Ubet, Montana. Talboys also mentions meeting Methodist minister William Wesley Van Orsdel.

Patten Family Papers

Summary:The Patten Family Papers consists of correspondence; biographical materials; case files; printed materials; school notes and artwork; memorabilia; and photographs. The earlier documents, 1895-1900 primarily pertain to F.E.W. Patten and George Y. Patten. The documents between 1900 and the 1920s generally pertain to George Y. Patten and his first marriage to Eleanor Ferris and their daughter Margaret. The later documents from the 1920s to 1986 refer mainly to George and his second wife, Frances Smith Patten. Letters from Frances Patten while she was in the Middle East as an American Field Staff agent are extensive. George Y. Patten's professional correspondence pertain to such topics as the Montana Automobile Association, the West Gallatin Highway into Yellowstone National Park, and the establishment of a Lewis and Clark Memorial. Printed materials holds pamphlets and news clippings on art, Montana history and international travel. School Notes and Records relates entirely to Margaret Patten's secondary school work and shows her interest and endeavors in visual art. Memorabilia refers to Margaret Patten's scrapbook and items collected by Frances Patten. Photographs refer mainly to Frances Smith Patten's Extension Service work and to her marriage to George Y. Patten.

Summary:The John J. Powers Papers contain correspondence of the Anaconda Company's Bureau of Safety, safety posters that Powers drew, pamphlets, and photographs. Topics include mines and miners in Butte in the late 1930s and early 1940s, safety equipment, mining and safety exhibits, work in the stopes, rock drilling, the engine room, work outside the mines, mining gear, soldiers on the front during World War II, American paratroopers in northern France two days after D-Day, American medics, troops in the Southwest Pacific, and German prisoners of war.

Summary:The Datus C. Proper Papers consist of journals, correspondence, family history documents, literary manuscript drafts, galley proofs, research notes, publisher correspondence, photographs and other memorabilia which document Proper's life as a student, United States Foreign Service officer, and outdoor writer. The subjects of Proper's writings encompass the full spectrum of fly fishing for trout, from stream side entomology to the ethics of catch and release angling. Hunting, particularly pheasant hunting and the training of dogs for the sport, is another subject heavily represented.
