John C. Ainsworth papers

Summary:John Commingers Ainsworth (1822-1893) was the major founder of the Oregon Steam Navigation (OSN) Company, the most powerful transportation monopoly in the Pacific Northwest. Ainsworth was also involved in a number of other ventures, including the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and various gold, silver and coal mining operations. The John Commingers Ainsworth Papers contain Ainsworth's diaries, autobiography, personal correspondence, photographs, and the business records of the Oregon Central Railroad, Oregon Steam Navigation Company, Northern Pacific Railroad Company, and various mining, building and shipping enterprises.

Ulius L. Amoss papers

Summary:Before, during, and after World War II, Ulius "Pete" Louis Amoss (1895-1961) engaged in espionage. His work included directorship of the OSS during the war and founder and director of the ISI, the International Services of Information Foundation, Incorporated. Amoss is credited with the coining the phrase "leaderless resistance." The collection includes correspondence, literary manuscripts, espionage material, and print material that reflect his life and work as a spy.

Summary:Roy C. Andrews was a school teacher and administrator in Michigan, Texas, Arkansas, Washington and Oregon. He was a chemistry instructor at the University of Oregon from 1935 until his retirement in 1950. Andrews is noted for his photographs of one-room schoolhouses in southern Lane County, 1911-1913. The collection consists of diaries, one account book, two ledgers, music concert lists, correspondence, University of Oregon material, and photographs.

Summary:Edward Anthony (1895-1971) was a writer and collaborator, directed publicity for Herbert Hoover's presidential campaign, and became an editor and publisher, most notably for Collier's. The collection contains supporting materials for thirteen books, article and short story manuscripts, personal and business correspondence, and Crowell-Collier Publishing company material consisting of inter-office memos, financial, promotional material, and the professional and personal papers of Don Marquis.

Oliver Cromwell Applegate papers

Summary:Oliver Cromwell Applegate (1845-1938), the son of Lindsay and Elizabeth Applegate (Applegate Trail pioneers), spent his career working with Oregon Indians. He was a subagent with the Indian Service at Yainax, and during the Modoc War he served as an interpreter and a scout. In 1873, he became a U.S. Commissioner, and in 1898 was appointed Klamath Indian Agent. After his resignation in 1905 he continued to work with the federal government on Indian issues such as the Grande Ronde tribal status challenge. The Oliver Cromwell Applegate papers consist mainly of Applegate family correspondence, with some miscellaneous bills, newspaper clippings, pension papers, documents, journals and the 1868 diary of Frank Applegate.

Summary:Mae Baucher was a Methodist Episcopal missionary in Yenping, China. The collection consists of correspondence, personal papers, and photographs, predominately from her career in China from 1926 to 1931. The correspondence describe Baucher's experiences and missionary work in China, as well as Chinese aggression towards missionaries the missionaries' flight from Yenping in 1927. There is information about Baucher's refuge in the Philippines and descriptions of military action of the communists. Photographs deal with Baucher's missionary service in China and nearby countries, and include unique Chinese artifacts and depictions of daily Chinese culture. Also portrayed are missionaries, facilities, and the patient and environs of the Yenping Hospital.
