Chris Wheeler photographs collection

Summary:This collection contains photographs collected and possibly taken by Chris L. Wheeler (b. 1927), State Engineer of Oregon from 1962-1975. The bulk of the photographs depict the Tumalo Irrigation Project in Deschutes County, Or. in 1913-1915. Other photographs, color slides, and photograph albums depict other state and private irrigation efforts in Oregon, circa 1910-1925, and dams and reservoirs in Oregon from 1950-1967.

Summary:This photographs collection documents much of the work of Morris H. Whitehouse (1878-1944), a Portland, Or.-based architect whose firms and successors operated for 77 years, making it the longest operating architectural firm in Oregon history. The images, dating from, 1911-1975, include construction progress photographs and exterior and interior views of buildings designed by Whitehouse and successor firms primarily in Oregon, but a few in Washington and Idaho.

Williams Collection consists of Williams' personal papers, historic photograph collection, and related materials pertaining to the history of the U.S. Forest Service as well as the forestry, environmental history, Native Americans, and geography especially of the Pacific Northwest. Williams assembled and created the materials during his career as sociologist and national historian with the U.S. Forest Service. The Gerald Williams Collection is closed for research at this time for processing. Materials will become available for researcher use as arrangement and description is completed.

Summary:Gerald W. Williams Prints and Postcards of Native Americans Collection consists primarily of black and white and color lithographic mounted postcards and photographic prints, some by well-known western photographers and studios. The time period ranges from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The images depict Native American culture in North America with a focus on the northwestern and southwestern United States, especially Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. Photographers attempted to document stereotypical aspects of Native American lives through portraits of individuals, families, and mothers with children, photographs of cultural artifacts such as totem poles, recent and ancient dwellings and ruins, canoes, and activities such as fishing, weaving baskets and blankets, and gathering huckleberries. Williams acquired the images in the course of his work as a Forest Service sociologist and historian and due to his interest in the history of Native Americans in the United States, especially that of the Pacific Northwest region.

Summary:The Gerald W. Williams Regional Albums consist of images and ephemera assembled by geographical regions. They were acquired and compiled Williams in the course of his work as a Forest Service sociologist and historian and due to his avocational interest in the history of forestry and the history of the United States, especially that of the Pacific Northwest region. The albums document popular tourist destinations, national parks, the natural environment, prominent natural and architectural landmarks, forests and forest operations, mining, trains and railroads, early towns and cities, prominent citizens, and human activities, such as public events, hunting and fishing, and everyday life. More than 650 images from selected Oregon albums have been digitized as part of the Gerald W. Williams collection. Gerald Williams worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1979 to 2005 as a sociologist (1979-1998) and historian (1998-2005).
