The collection includes correspondence, articles and essays, editorial letter, speeches and writings by others, subject files and mailing lists. John C. Ainsworth papers

Summary:John Commingers Ainsworth (1822-1893) was the major founder of the Oregon Steam Navigation (OSN) Company, the most powerful transportation monopoly in the Pacific Northwest. Ainsworth was also involved in a number of other ventures, including the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and various gold, silver and coal mining operations. The John Commingers Ainsworth Papers contain Ainsworth's diaries, autobiography, personal correspondence, photographs, and the business records of the Oregon Central Railroad, Oregon Steam Navigation Company, Northern Pacific Railroad Company, and various mining, building and shipping enterprises.

Ulius L. Amoss papers

Summary:Before, during, and after World War II, Ulius "Pete" Louis Amoss (1895-1961) engaged in espionage. His work included directorship of the OSS during the war and founder and director of the ISI, the International Services of Information Foundation, Incorporated. Amoss is credited with the coining the phrase "leaderless resistance." The collection includes correspondence, literary manuscripts, espionage material, and print material that reflect his life and work as a spy.

Clarence Leroy Andrews papers

Summary:Clarence Leroy Andrews was an employee of the Interior Department Bureau of Education and Reindeer Service in Alaska in the 1920s. He focused on Eskimos and their use of reindeer herds, writing several books about Eskimo life in Alaska. He was especially concerned with corporations which exploited reindeer herds, and led a campaign in the 1930s to remove Carl Momen of Seattle from control of the reindeer industry. The C. L. Andrews papers consist largely of business and personal correspondence, published and unpublished manuscripts, and photographs. Important to the collection are the W. T. Lopp files that relate to education in Alaska and the reindeer service from 1908-1939.

Roy C. Andrews papers

Summary:Roy C. Andrews was a school teacher and administrator in Michigan, Texas, Arkansas, Washington and Oregon. He was a chemistry instructor at the University of Oregon from 1935 until his retirement in 1950. Andrews is noted for his photographs of one-room schoolhouses in southern Lane County, 1911-1913. The collection consists of diaries, one account book, two ledgers, music concert lists, correspondence, University of Oregon material, and photographs.

Oliver Cromwell Applegate papers

Summary:Oliver Cromwell Applegate (1845-1938), the son of Lindsay and Elizabeth Applegate (Applegate Trail pioneers), spent his career working with Oregon Indians. He was a subagent with the Indian Service at Yainax, and during the Modoc War he served as an interpreter and a scout. In 1873, he became a U.S. Commissioner, and in 1898 was appointed Klamath Indian Agent. After his resignation in 1905 he continued to work with the federal government on Indian issues such as the Grande Ronde tribal status challenge. The Oliver Cromwell Applegate papers consist mainly of Applegate family correspondence, with some miscellaneous bills, newspaper clippings, pension papers, documents, journals and the 1868 diary of Frank Applegate.

John B. Appleton photographs

Summary:John B. Appleton (1891-1953) was a geographer and intelligence analyst. He traveled and researched in China, Japan and Korea in 1934-1936.The collection documents Appleton's travels in China, Japan, Korea and Manchuria in the 1930s including his passage through Oahu, Aden Port Said, Malta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The primary subject matter is the monuments of China and Japan, the landscapes and agriculture, and the lives of the workers. Aspects of rice, soybean and tea cultivation are captured, as are silkworm cultivation and silk processing; coal mining; and steel processing.

Ray Atkeson photographs

Summary:Ray Atkeson (1907-1990) was a Portland photographer who received international acclaim for his images of landscape in the American West. Atkeson produced black and white documentary images and then became a pioneer in color photography. His love of mountains produced iconic images of the Cascades and skiers in Oregon, Utah and Idaho. The collection consists of XXXX black and white negatives (dates), slides, and XXX color transparencies The collection also includes work by Mira Atkeson, Ray's first wife and a noted photographer in her own right.

Summary:The Baker family, consisting of Walter H. Baker, his wife Ida S. Baker (nee Rawalt) and their three sons, William A., Walter R., and Paul, as well as Ida Baker's sister, Mary Hoffman (nee Rawalt), her husband William and their son Harlan, all moved to the Salem, Oregon area in the 1890s. The collection contains records of the Baker, Rawalt, and Hoffman family that include diaries, correspondence, photographs, negatives, and business records of Walter Baker.
