He traveled and researched in China, Japan and Korea in 1934-1936.The collection documents Appleton's travels in China, Japan, Korea and Manchuria in the 1930s including his passage through Oahu, Aden Port Said, Malta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The primary subject matter is the monuments of China and Japan, the landscapes and agriculture, and the lives of the workers. Aspects of rice, soybean and tea cultivation are captured, as are silkworm cultivation and silk processing; coal mining; and steel processing.

The photographs are portraits, candid snapshots, Haynes Inc. (HInc), Haynes Picture Shops (HPS), and Haynes Studios Inc. (HSInc) photographs, and other images covering a very diverse subject matter. The vast majority of the photographs are concerned with friends and family of the of the Haynes (FJH and JEH) and Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Additionally, there are also "Cabinet and Boudoir" photographs taken by FJH as the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and many photographs, numbered and unnumbered, in Haynes family photo albums. Additional images include artwork prepared for Haynes brochures, artwork by illustrator Fritz Schlanze, photos of paintings by W.H. Jackson, an extensive collection of reproductions of paintings by C.M. Russell sold by HInc and HPS in YNP, and other artwork and photographs related to the area surrounding YNP and the West in general.

Hugh Pruett (1865-1955) was an educator and an amateur astronomer who passionately tracked Northwest meteors, built and operated the Evergreen Observatory in his home in Eugene, taught astronomy classes through the University of Oregon Extension for thirty years, served as Pacific Coast director for the American Meteor Society, and wrote articles for astronomy journals. The collection contains correspondence, articles and manuscripts of articles, an Evergreen Observatory visitor registration book, Port Orford meteor information, clippings, scrapbooks that document his prolific radio essays, speeches, and newspaper articles, and also clippings of his father's newspaper writings and participation in the Baptist church, as well as photographs and negatives that document the activities of Evergreen Observatory and illustrate Pruett's writings and lectures.

Collection comprises diaries, correspondence, literary manuscripts, and photographs by Thompson.
