Clarence Leroy Andrews papers

Summary:Clarence Leroy Andrews was an employee of the Interior Department Bureau of Education and Reindeer Service in Alaska in the 1920s. He focused on Eskimos and their use of reindeer herds, writing several books about Eskimo life in Alaska. He was especially concerned with corporations which exploited reindeer herds, and led a campaign in the 1930s to remove Carl Momen of Seattle from control of the reindeer industry. The C. L. Andrews papers consist largely of business and personal correspondence, published and unpublished manuscripts, and photographs. Important to the collection are the W. T. Lopp files that relate to education in Alaska and the reindeer service from 1908-1939.

Jonathan Bourne papers

Summary:Jonathan Bourne was a politician in Oregon at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1885 and 1897, he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, and was elected U. S. Senator in 1906. Considered a progressive, Bourne was a founder and president of the National Progressive Republican League in 1911 and organized the Republican Publicity Association in 1912. Most of the collection consists of U. S. Senate correspondence and case files. The Senate case files relate to topics which arose during Bourne's term of office, ranging from problems with the apple crop, through management of Indian affairs and reservations, to construction of public buildings, bridges and other projects in Oregon. There are folders on such issues as child labor, conservation, Chinese exclusion, and land law.

Summary:Walter S. Bowman (1865-1938) was a professional photographer who worked in Pendleton, Oregon, from the late 1880s to the mid 1930s. Bowman's photographs document daily life in Eastern Oregon, including special events such as the Pendleton Round-Up. The collection consists of almost 800 negatives and prints representative of the span of the photographer's work, but his noted images of tribal people were largely destroyed after his death.

Summary:William Burke (dates unknown) photographed the Southern Oregon communities of Coos, Curry and Douglas counties from the 1900s to the 1930s. In 1912 Burke and F.F. Sasman traveled on a Pathfinder to demonstrate the need for better roads on the coast. The collection consists of 380 images, prints and negatives, of community events, shipping, railroads, logging, mining and ship-building, and the Pathfinder expedition.

Chaney was an paleobotanist, an author, and a long-time member of the U.S. Park Service Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings and Monuments, and of the Save the Redwoods League. The collection contains professional correspondence, paleobotany research, mounted botany specimens, manuscripts and published material, Carnegie Institution research work material, Berkeley faculty material including lectures, correspondence, and committee work, Save the Redwoods League files, manuscripts of books and articles, and photographs.

Summary:Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942) was an American sculptor, illustrator and writer who lived among Native American tribes when he was young and then dedicated his career to artistically recording and portraying them accurately and with dignity. The collection consists of his correspondence, drawings, sketches, and paintings, as well as anthropological and linguistic material, notes and other documentation of tribes he visited or lived with.
