Adair family reminiscences

Summary:Collection comprises photocopied typescripts of reminiscences by and about Mary Ann Dickinson Adair and John Adair. John Adair and his family traveled to Oregon via Panama and California after President Polk appointed him Collector of Customs in Astoria. The texts concern life in Kentucky and Oregon and include family information and transcriptions of archival records. Texts of letters written by Mrs. Adair during the journey are also included.

Samuel Henry Brown papers

Summary:Samuel Henry Brown was the Republican state senator from Marion County, Oregon, 1923-1933. In 1934 he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor. Collection contains correspondence, 1906-1940, mainly concerning business of the Legislature and the 1934 race for governor. Also included are the letters of George M. Battersby, Co. M, 20th Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Infantry, 1898-1899, from the West Coast and the Philippine Islands.

John Ray Bruckart papers

Summary:John Ray Bruckart (1887-1979) worked for the United States Forest Service, serving as supervisor of the Willamette National Forest in Oregon from 1938 to 1954. Bruckart was an expert on Douglas fir silviculture and management. Collection includes personal correspondence and general correspondence, including several letters from Oregon Senator Wayne Morse. Also included in the collection are Bruckart's writings on such topics as Douglas fir silviculture, "The Rise of Bureaucracy," and "The Taming of a Forest," in addition to his memoirs. Collection also includes materials on the Willamette National Forest and the Three Sisters Wilderness Area; and several editions of Forest Service alumni newsletters.

Carl Frederick Solberg Papers

Summary:Carl Frederick Solberg was born in Kristiania (Oslo), Norway, in 1833 and came to America in 1853. In 1857 he became editor of the Norwegian-language paper "Emigraten," becoming publisher in 1860. He was war correspondent for the paper during the Civil War, and in 1872 founded another paper, the "Minnesota." He died in 1924, at age 91.

Summary:Papers of the family of John Heard Couch, one of the original developers of the townsite of Portland, Oregon, and his descendents, including members of the Glisan and Robertson families. Papers include correspondence, legal papers, land ownership records, clippings, family Bibles, journals of John Heard Couch, and papers concerning Couch's wife Caroline and their descendants Caroline Wilson, Clementine Lewis, and Elizabeth and Rodney Glisan. Of special note is John Heard Couch's logbook, 1853-1858, for voyages on the ships Chenamus and Madonna; and the travel diary of Nan Robertson, 1911-1912, written during a trip to San Francisco and Southern Asia.

Father James Croke letters

Summary:Rev. James Croke (1827-1888) was a Catholic missionary priest who served in Oregon in the 1850s, reporting directly to Bishop Francis Blanchet of Oregon City, Oregon. This small collection consists of typed transcripts of letters from Croke to Blanchet concerning the details of his missionary work. The original letters are held privately.
