There are several handwritten essays concerning: the history of Butte; a childhood accident suffered by Francis and treated by Butte doctors; the early days of the Butte Electric Power Company and the Montana Power Company; a horse named Prince owned by Francis during his childhood at Waterloo. Included is a synopsis of a June 26, 1966 interview with Francis by MSU Special Collections librarian Minnie Paugh, as well as the letters she received from him from 1969 to 1971. There is also an original photograph of the Beall family at their Waterloo ranch, circa 1880. |

Also included are edited versions of an oral history interview with Huidekoper conducted by Elizabeth DeFrate and Merrill G. Russell has been placed in a separate folder. Summary: | The Townsend Plan was an old-age pension plan idea proposed by California physician Francis E. Townsend in 1934, prior to the enactment of Social Security. The collection contains records of the Townsend National Headquarters in Ohio and includes Board of Director's minutes, Townsend Foundation Trustees minutes and resolutions, financial papers, correspondence, National Convention materials including audio recordings, materials of other pension organizations, literature and publications, Francis E. Townsend interviews, a scrapbook, and photographs. |
