Jonathan Bourne papers

Summary:Jonathan Bourne was a politician in Oregon at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1885 and 1897, he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, and was elected U. S. Senator in 1906. Considered a progressive, Bourne was a founder and president of the National Progressive Republican League in 1911 and organized the Republican Publicity Association in 1912. Most of the collection consists of U. S. Senate correspondence and case files. The Senate case files relate to topics which arose during Bourne's term of office, ranging from problems with the apple crop, through management of Indian affairs and reservations, to construction of public buildings, bridges and other projects in Oregon. There are folders on such issues as child labor, conservation, Chinese exclusion, and land law.

Summary:John Richard Dellenback (1918-2002) served in the Oregon state legislature and represented southwest Oregon in the U.S. Congress (Republican), where he wrote the bill that established the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in 1972. The collection contains congressional records that include subject files, correspondence, reports and publications, speeches, news releases, as well as calendars, scrapbooks, photographs, 16mm film, and an oral history interview with Dellenback.

Summary:Carlton Raymond Savage (1897-1990), a University of Oregon graduate, worked for the U.S. State Department helping to craft U.S. foreign policy for thirty-five years, and wrote a State Department publication that would become a national bestseller, Peace and War: U.S. Foreign Policy, 1931-1941. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, a personal journal, political biographical files, State Department's Policy Planning Council and United Nations subject files, reviews and publicity for State Department publications by Savage, a volume of hearings before the House Judiciary Subcommittee concerning a declaration of war, and photographs.
