Summary
An album consisting of 249 black & white photographic images, mostly snapshots, taken and/or collected by Newell James Crookston between roughly 1910 and 1917. Many of these photos are from an Eastern States mission (1914-1915) for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and consist of New York City views, and of sites relevant to early Mormon Church history. Other images are of Washington D.C., Logan Canyon, agriculture on the Crookston farm, and Crookston family members. Identification of the photographs was either determined from internal evidence or supplied by Mrs. Wennegren. The album was disassembled to prevent further damage from occurring due to loose prints and surface rubbing caused by traces of glue. Each photograph was numbered in pencil above the upper right hand corner.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Newell James Crookston (1890-1976) grew up in North Logan. He attended Utah State University and was a farmer, teacher, and principal of the North Logan School. Later he became the Cache County Clerk and was employed by Utah State University in a variety of capacities. He is perhaps best known for writing the short book, "The Story of Old Ephraim," although he was the author of several other pieces on Cache Valley history as well. He married Ethel Smith in 1916 and the couple had six children. In 1965 Ethel passed away and in 1967 he was remarried to Glenna Marie Ballantyne. He passed away on October 21, 1976.
