Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of sociology, University of Washington.

Norman Sylvester Hayner was born 1896 in Peking, China of missionary parents. He received a B.A., University of Washington, 1920; and a Ph.D. University of Chicago, 1923. He was a professor of sociology, University of Washington, 1925-1968. His area of teaching and field work was in juvenile delinquency, penology, criminology, family, and marriage. He also taught at the University of Iowa in 1968. Hayner was a member of the Washington State Prison Terms and Parole Board, 1951-1955, and chairman in 1956; a trustee, Travelers Aid Society; founder and officer, Pacific Northwest Conference on Family Relations, from 1939; member, Mental Health and Mental Retardation Council, 1968. He was also a member of the Washington Association for Social Welfare, and Washington Temperance Association. Hayner died in 1977.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, manuscripts, reference files, curriculum material, and student papers from his work as a professor of sociology at the University of Washington (1925-68), his field work in areas of juvenile delinquency, penology, criminology, family, and marriage; his activities as a member and head of the Washington Prison Terms and Parole Board (1951-56), and as a member of other professional and civic organizations; 1913-1970.
