Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1834, Jason Lee and fellow missionaries came to the Oregon territory to establish a Methodist mission for Kalapuya Indians living in the Willamette Valley. The primary purpose was to "educate and civilize" the Kalapuya children. The missionaries additionally aimed to provide health care, nourishment, and lodging for those children whose families and communities had been devastated by diseases introduced by EuroAmericans.

In the early 1840s, the mission was failing, thus the educational focus for the school turned to white settlers. On February 1, 1842, Lee, fellow missionaries, and members of the growing Salem community decided to establish an institution of learning called the "Oregon Institute." The Institute's constitution was adopted in March 1842, and the first day of class was held on August 13, 1844. The Institute began as a boarding school to educate young students. Chloe Clark Willson, an early member of the missionary group was the first teacher.

In 1853, focus changed to an older set of students and the name was officially changed to Willamette University. Emily York was the first graduate of the University in 1859. By that time, enrollment had reached 320 students and a new building was needed to house a growing student population. Thus began the construction of Waller hall, made possible by the support of Reverend Alvan Waller. In addition to the College of Liberal Arts, Willamette University established a medical school in 1867, the College of Law in 1883, the Kimball School of Theology in 1906, the Atkinson Graduate School of Management in 1974, and the Graduate School of Education in 1995. The Medical School merged with the University of Oregon in 1913, the Kimball School closed in 1930, and the Graduate School of Education closed in 2014.

Willamette continues as a nationally renowned, private liberal arts university focused on pursuing academic excellence; fostering diversity; and preparing global-minded students.

Series XXVII:  MemoRandom (Memorandum), 1976-1993Return to Top

Holli Davenport, Assistant to the Chaplains, began publishing MemoRandom in 1973. Publication changed hands, and undertook a slight name change, when ASWU (Associated Students of Willamette University) took over publication in 1983. ASWU published Memorandum for only one year due to lack of funding. Publication then went back to Holli Davenport, until August 1989 when the Office of News and Publication took over publication and changed the title back to Memorandum. Copies and mock-ups of MemoRandom can also be found in the Chaplain's Office records. Copies of ASWU's Memorandum can be found in the Student Publications collection.

Series XXXV:  The Scene, 1967-2017Return to Top

The Willamette Scene began publication in April 1967. It was a quarterly publication providing insitutional news for the campus community, alumni, and University supporters. The focus was on University accomplishements and advancement. Until Spring 1970, The Willamette Scene was a newsletter style publication. In order to increase readership and support for Willamette, The Willamette Scene was published as a newspaper tabloid and included in the Oregon Statesman and Capital Journal newspapers until 1974. This tabloid style publication replaced The Alumnus. In 1971, publication featured both a newspaper tabloid to be included in local newspapers as well as a magazine sent to a smaller number of consitutuents. The Annual Report of the President also began being included in the publication. In 1984, The Scene underwent a redesign and became a quarterly magazine publication for "alumni and friends of the west's oldest University." Publication of The Scene stopped in 2014, with a redesign and a title change to Willamette.

Series XXXVII:  Student Handbooks - College of Liberal Arts, 1892-2013Return to Top

The students' handbook was first published in 1892 by the Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations, highlighting things that were helpful for a student to know. In 1927, publication switched to the Associated Students of Willamette University. It was then commonly known as the "Rook" bible. Publication transferred to the Student Affairs/Student Activities office in the 1990s. The Handbook includes information about campus resources, policies, history, and traditions.
