Member of Phi Delta Mu sorority, 1948-1951, and Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, 1951-1954.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection includes an oral history and some genealogical materials. In the oral history, Gutmann discusses her involvement in Jewish sororities. She first talks about Phi Delta Mu, a sorority for high school girls, describing the pledging process, the backgrounds of the other members, and sorority activities. She then discusses Alpha Epsilon Phi, one of the two Jewish sororities at the University of Washington in the 1950's. She describes rushing and pledging in detail, but also touches on social life within the sorority. She briefly relates some childhood memories about growing up on Yesler Way.

The genealogical related materials include U.S.-issued immigration papers including identification, declaration of intention, and marriage license for Raphael and Signourou Sedis as well as Certificates of Naturalization for Albert and Perla Ovadia. Also includes a news clipping pertaining to the Sedis's 50th anniversary, a photocopy of a letter regarding Addis Gutmann, Sr.'s activities during World War II, and a note from Samuel Gompers along with a newsclipping of his meeting with Miriam Hyans in Seattle.
