Historical NoteReturn to Top

Mervin Booth Hogan (1906-1998) was born to Charles Ira and Sarah Ann Booth Hogan in Bountiful, Utah. He was educated in Utah schools, completing his bachelor's degree in engineering at the University of Utah in 1927. Between 1927 and 1931, Hogan worked in Pittsburgh as a design engineer for the Westinghouse Electronic Corporation. During that time, he attended the University of Pittsburgh and received his master's degree in 1929. Hogan was offered a position as assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Utah in 1931. He took the position and later became chairman of the department. He held that position until 1956, when he returned to private industry. Hogan served in various engineering capacities in the United States and the United Kingdom over the next fifteen years. He returned to the University of Utah as a professor in 1971. Aside from his professional life, Hogan was an accepted authority in the field of Mormonism and Masonry. He published many articles and several books on those subjects.
