Folklore Classes, 1966-1969Return to Top

The papers in this box were prepared for classes taught by Jan Brunvand. His notes and comments are of particular interest. Specific classifications such as superstitions, legends, and songs, were the focus of much folklore study at this time. Brunvand, and those processing folklore materials under his direction, often separated specific topics from student projects and collections and arranged them according to specific topic headings. (See also 3x5 cards in boxes 65-70). This means that the following material may or may not be complete as it was originally gathered and arranged. In this box and also in box 61 each folder title includes a brief statement which indicates project or collection content. The term project generally indicates an assigned subject. The term collection has a broader connotation and generally reflects the student's choice of study and/or assembly of materials. Note restrictions for use written on some of the cover sheets regarding appropriate use of the material.

73	1	"Baba Yaga Stories in Russian Folklore," by Rebekah Caller The author, who has spent time in Russia, gives background material on Baba Yaga and then discusses three narratives involving this well known Russian character: "Vasilisa the Beautiful," "The Three Sons," and "Baba Yaga." The interview questions and tape transcriptions are included.
73	2	"Ritual Osculations," by Greg Loscher Loscher interviewed his family members regarding kissing as a greeting as well as affectionate expression. His paper includes interviews and an interpretation of kissing rituals in family and social groups.
73	3	"The Folk Group of Body Artists," by Jessica Campbell This is a thoughtful analysis of the reasons for body piercing and tattooing by a young female participant. Included are interviews with two young male participants.
73	4	"The Cowboy's Game," by Amy Tidwell A discussion of rodeo events which emphasizes that "you have to understand jargon, superstitions, stories, pranks, customs, and beliefs to fully understand a cowboy and rodeo." A photograph of a local rodeo event and the official program of Fiesta Days Rodeo July 1997 in Spanish Fork, Utah, are included.
73	5	"Folklore in the Scout Campfire Performance," by Keith Larson The author attended three campfire ceremonies: The Cub Scout Day Camp, The Boy Scout Campfire, and The College Backpacking Campfire. He then and described ceremonies and skits of each. His extensive field notes are included.

The Literary Organization: Sixty Years of Sisterhood," by Cheree Larson In 1938 six young married women in Rexburg, Idaho, decided to form a group that became a combination book club, classroom, charitable foundation, and giddy sorority. Through the years 70 women have participated. The author has included her field notes.
73	7	"Conspiracy Theories," by Travis M. Stockwell This paper focuses on political and military plots told by a friend of a friend in the manner which often becomes an urban legend. Included are excerpts of interviews and a web site.
73	8	"Ski Lodge Recipes," by Kelly Horrocks How impecunious skiers and snowboarders create free "meals" from expensive ski lodge menus using crackers, ketchup, lemon wedges, salt and pepper, and other similar ingredients.
73	9	"Graffiti in the Salt Lake Valley," by Matthew W. Reading An illustrated attempt to analyze various forms of spray-painting on public buildings and to celebrate some of the works as legitimate art forms. Photos.
73	10	"The Guatemalan Soccer Event," by Shane Stilson A non-Spanish speaking Anglo, who has played soccer with a Guatemalan team for four years, attempts to analyze why soccer is so mystically beloved by its participants and viewers.
73	11	"Variations in the Rituals of Invitations and Acceptance Surrounding High School Dances in the Salt Lake Valley," by Michael Wade Christopherson A look into the complex pranks cooked up by high school boys to make it unnecessary to ask girls directly to be their dates. The author draws on his own experiences and that of his brothers.
73	12	"The Ghosts of the McCune Mansion," by Allison Akerlow This paper contains a brief history of the Mansion's construction and early use, and several ghost stories related by interviewees who lived or worked in the building.
73	13	"Bluegrass, a Folk Community," by Ronald Lucero In his discussion of this music form the author describes the form in general, and describes his experience with players thereof. He has interviewed a 23-year old performer who places emphasis on the importance of bluegrass in his life.
73	14	"Master of the Thumb: the Folklore of Drinking Games," by Teriesa Runyan This discussion of the prevalence of games among groups of drinkers to enhance conviviality includes card games, endurance games, tag, TV, movie-related, and icebreaker games.
73	15	"Maggie's Bloomers," by Laura Argeris The author has presented an overview of the incidence of ghosts' haunting theaters. She has included interviews with people who have sighted or sensed ghosts in local theaters.
73	16	"A Jewish Seder at BYU," by Melissa Graham A detailed description of the Seder celebrated at the Sky Room on the Brigham Young University (BYU) campus in April, 1997 which was attended by largely Mormon participants.
