Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Florestine Roberts Ware was born in 1915, and moved to Seattle in the 1940s. She was a small business owner during the 50s and 60s. Ware was elected secretary of King County Foster Parents, Inc. She was a caravan leader and spokesperson for the North West Convention to the Poor People’s Campaign, 1967; and a candidate to the U.S. House of Representatives, 1968. She served on the Seattle King County Equal Opportunity Board executive committee, 1967- ; Seattle Treatment Center Board, 1969- ; Model City Citizen Health Advisory Board chairman, 1969- ; Model City Representative to the Public Defender Board; Consultant for Summer Institute for Seattle Public Schools (Community and Urban Problems); Committee Chairman for writing of the Title Eight Drop-Out Program, Seattle School District no.1; Committee for Career Opportunities Project Planners, Superintendent of Public Instruction office; Interviewer-Supervisor, Auerbach Corporation for the evaluation of Seattle Work Incentive Program; Executive Secretary, Seattle King County Economic Opportunity Board of Trustees, 1970- ; Consultant to Triple T Project (June 1970) Government Project for Teachers under the direction of the State Superintendent of Schools; Member of the Washington State President’s White House Conference on Nutrition and Health; Vice-Chairman, Central Seattle Community Council; and Consultant on Urban Problems and Poverty Programs. Mrs. Ware died in 1981.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, reports, ephemera, miscellaneous, speeches and writings. Scrapbook with clippings, articles, and letters.

Scope and Content: Speeches and commentary led by Mrs. Ware, ca. 1967-1970. Ms. Ware introduces a speaker from Foster Parents Association by quoting a statement by Senator Fred H. Dore, chairman of the Washington State Senate Appropriations Committee, concerning the 1969 Health care budget. The speaker is Mrs. Claudia Ward who discusses her organization, King County Foster Parents Association, and its goals, as well as its connection with the Welfare Department and funding. There follows a discussion of the financial situation of foster parents, especially minorities, by Ms. Ware, Ms. Ward and other foster parents. Next (Side B, 48) there is a discussion led by Mrs. Ware with Mrs. Jean Cushman of the Seattle Treatment Center about the need for drug and alcoholism treatment Center Facility. Tape 49, Side A is a talk given by Flo Ware on KRAB radio about the power struggle in the Central Area of Seattle. This includes discussion of economic problems, housing, employment, education situations of blacks in Seattle. Ms Ware also speaks about the problems of racism. Side B is a recording of a speech made by Ms Ware when she was a candidate for the Citizens Advisory Board. She talks about the problems of the poor in Seattle's central area. Ida Foster, another candidate discusses health care problems of poor minorities. Barbara Otem, another candidate speaks briefly, as does Margaret Johnson, who talks about nursing home and hospital conditions. Mrs. Durkey discusses her candidacy and the need for citizen involvement as well as potential problems with the model cities program.
