Historical NoteReturn to Top

Herbert H. Pommerenke was a missionary in China for over twenty years. From 1924 to 1927 Pommerenke was in Canton teaching at the Canton Christian College. He returned to the U.S. to marry Jean MacPherson in 1927.

In 1930 he and his wife, who was also a missionary, returned to China where they worked in Canton, Yeung Kong, and Ko Chow until 1936. In late 1936-1937 Pommerenke attended the Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1938 they returned to Yeung Long, staying until 1941, when they travelled to New York City.

The couple then traveled through Europe and India from 1943-1944 in an attempt to return to China, which was in the midst of War. They finally re-entered China in late 1944. In 1945-1946 Pommerenke taught at Lingan University in China.
