Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William Isaac Marshall was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on June 25, 1840, to parents William and Florina Weeks-Barrus Marshall. He taught school in Massachusetts, Ohio, Ontario, and Pennsylvania before moving to Montana Territory in 1866 to work as a gold miner. While in Montana, he also served as a school principal and county superintendent of schools, and conducted tours and sold photographs of Yellowstone Park. He returned to Fitchburg in 1875 before moving to Chicago in 1887. In addition to working as the principal of Chicago’s Gladstone School, he was also a historian and writer who dedicated much of his work to debunking the “Whitman Myth.” He wrote numerous articles and books about the topic, and lectured throughout the country about the Whitman Myth and Yellowstone Park.

On August 20, 1864, Marshall married Ellen Porter Foster. The couple had a daughter, Nellie. Marshall died in Chicago on October 30, 1906.
