Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Klallam is a Native American language of the Salishan family. It is closely related to, though not mutually intelligible with, Northern Straits (Saanich, Samish, Lummi, Songish, Sooke). Until the 1970s Klallam was spoken at all four reservations (Elwha, Jamestown, and Port Gamble on the Olympic Peninsula and Becher Bay on Vancouver Island). At the beginning of the 21st century it is spoken as a first language by fewer than five elders at Elwha and Becher Bay.

40 5" reel recordings; 1 microfilm reel

Scope and Content: Taped recordings of conversations in Saanich, some with Cowichan and English; microfilm is of accompanying notes.

Daily interviews were conducted with Elsie Claxton and Violet Williams at the East Saanich Reserve, British Columbia. Total time with informants amounted to over 150 hours. 40 one-half hour tapes of elicited, textual, and conversational material were recorded and documented in approximately 500 notebook pages. The elicited material includes the entire B.C. Provincial Museum word list and a great deal of paradigmatic and syntactic information. The short to medium length texts include anecdotes, traditional tales, local history, and old Saanich "rules for living" such as prescriptive behavior for expectant mothers and fathers. All texts are recorded in Saanich, some also in English and Cowichan. The conversations are on various topics including discussions of meanings, contexts, and acceptability for particular Saanich and Cowichan, and others exhibit switching among Saanich, Cowichan, and English. Most texts and conversations are yet untranscribed.
