Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles P. Dose was a German immigrant who had a real estate business originally based in Chicago. In 1871 Dose and his partners, the Fricke Brothers, bought a 40-acre piece of land on Lake Washington in Seattle. Dose moved his family to Seattle in 1898 and began working with his son, Charles C. Dose to develop the land. They platted the Dose Addition in 1906 on 10 acres along South Walker Street in the area that would later become part of Seattle’s Mount Baker District. The first house was built at 31st Avenue and Walker Street. The Dose family lived in Mount Baker Park and Mrs. Charles C. Dose (Phoebe Dose) was instrumental in the creation of the Mount Baker Improvement Club.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Mount Baker neighborhood is located along Lake Washington, southeast of downtown Seattle. The area was developed after 1900 following the construction of the Rainier Avenue Electric Street Railway in the 1890s. The nearby Dose Addition, planned and plotted in 1906, was actually conceived of earlier than the Mt. Baker sub-division, which was planned in 1907 by the Hunter Tract Improvement Company. The Mount Baker Park area (including Mount Baker Park Addition and the Dose Addition) was one of Seattle’s earliest planned residential communities and made an attempt to integrate the landscape into its design as well as to remain an exclusively residential area. The houses were all built between 1905 and 1929 and encompass a variety of styles.

The Mount Baker Improvement Club was formed in 1909 and claims to be the oldest continuously active community club in the country. By 1910 there were almost 50 members who were dedicated to such tasks as acquiring lighting, police protection, neighborhood beautification and providing a community social activities.
