Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Francis Pope was born on March 1, 1843 in London, Canada. He attended the London grammar school until the age of 16. He was employed as a druggist in Simcoe, Canada, for three years and for two years in Toronto, Canada.
In 1865, Francis Pope took passage on the steamer Golden Rule for California via the Isthmus. The vessel was wrecked on a coral reef in the Caribbean Sea. Pope and his fellow passengers lived on the reef for two weeks, until removed by a U.S. frigate and carried to Panama. Pope was employed in a drug store at San Francisco for a year and then came to Helena, Montana.
In 1868, Francis Pope married Miss Hannah Coop, a native of Clinton, Canada. The Popes lived in Helena and had six children. Francis Pope was co-owner of Pope and O'Connor Wholesale and Retail Druggists. Francis Pope was a Knight of Pythias, a member of the A.O.U.W., and a secretary of the Montana Agricultural, Mineral, and Mechanical Association. Francis Pope probably died in 1900.

The collection contains one partial reel microfilm diary of Francis Pope's travels in the Montana territory by steamer, during the year 1866. The diary contains a day-to-day travelogue, as well as a record of expenses and correspondence. It is arranged chronologically.
