Historical NoteReturn to Top

The University of Washington Center for the Humanities was established by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1987 with the mandate to support interdisciplinary activities in the humanities. The Center sponsored a major conference on a subject of broad humanistic interest each year and supported a variety of faculty research and teaching activities. In 1997, the Center was renamed the Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities in honor of a major gift made by Barclay Simpson as a tribute to his father, which established an endowment fund for the support of excellence in the humanities at the University of Washington. In the same year, the University Initiative Fund awarded the Center substantial resources for the enhancement and expansion of its programs. The Center continues to foster innovative crossdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities by sponsoring a public lectures and forums, scholarly conferences, collaborative research groups, interdisciplinary courses, public humanities programs, publications, and a fellowship program for UW faculty and doctoral students.
