Historical NoteReturn to Top

The original constitution, dated October 7, 1920, states that the object of the Laurelhurst Improvement Club will be "…The improvement, beautifying, and betterment of that part of the city known as the Laurelhurst District, which will comprise the Laurelhurst, Laurelhurst Heights and the Palisades Additions to Seattle." From the beginning, the standing committees reflect this objective as they included Street, Sidewalks, Lights, Water, Sewer, Fire, Municipal Legislation, Transportation, Parks and Beautification, Building Restrictions along with the usual ones of Reception, Entertainment, Program, and Membership. Membership was open to " …all residents of the Laurelhurst District who contributed to the bus fund." Monthly meetings were held on the second Monday of the month and annual election of officers were at the February meeting.

At the March 8, 1926 meeting, the name of the club was officially changed to the Laurelhurst Community Club, and the constitution dated September 13 of the same year describes the Laurelhurst District as comprised of Laurelhurst, Laurelhurst Heights, Palisades, Scottish Heights, Bellvoir. Additionally, the Laurelhurst Villas and the adjacent waterfront. Membership was then open to all residents or property owners.

Over the years, LCC has maintained an active interchange with the City of Seattle concerning streets, traffic, bus routes, crime, underground wiring, and parks. Youth activities including Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and the Athletic Fund have also been of primary interest. Additional areas of interest have included the University of Washington Arboretum, the expansion of the University of Washington Hospital and stadium, Children’s Orthopedic Hospital and it's helipad, NOAA, the Coast Guard Property and others.

Information about LCC activities and meetings continues to be sent to members through a monthly newsletter.

Processing Note

In the processing of this material, some items were discarded. The scrapbook after the the record had been removed, various ring binders and plastic sleeves that had also held records. Only one copy of duplicate newsletters, environmental impact statements and other miscellaneous papers were retained.

Original order has been preserved within all folders. Because the minutes, reports, and correspondence for the years 1920-39 were glued or stapled together into a scrapbook, sometimes back to back, they were left as such and filed chronologically. The bulk of the draft and final environmental impact statements concerning the various areas of interest were placed together and arranged chronologically by area of interest.

Acquisition Information

These records were donated to the Libraries by the Laurelhurst Community Club and were transferred to the Libraries on behalf of the club by Alan Hovland in 1988. Current records will be added when the club secretary judges them inactive.
