Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Robert Garfias was born in San Francisco in 1932, the child of Mexican-American parents. As a youngster he studied classical guitar and jazz saxophone. In high school he studied Western classical music composition, and he formed a jazz combo that played gigs for beatniks in the North Beach area of San Francisco, where he traveled in a circle of musicians that included Dave Brubeck, Vince Delgado, Vince Guaraldi, Harry Partch, and Bill Smith. During his career he founded the ethnomusicology program at the University of Washington; served as Dean of Arts at the University of California, Irvine, as a member of the Smithsonian Council, and as a presidential appointee to the U.S. National Council for the Arts; and conducted significant periods of fieldwork and language study in Japan, Okinawa, Korea, the Philippines, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Central America, Burma, Romania, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, and among Okinawans in the United States.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Contents: The radio show themes include Burmese classical music, contemporary Japanese compositions (inspired by traditional court music), and music by several Western classical composers.

This collection includes a series of radio shows taped directly from the radio; 4 separate tracks were recorded on each tape - Side 1 channels A and B and Side 2 channels A and B. In most cases the radio program is in progress when the recording begins, and some channels include parts of more than one program. Program dates are written on the backs of the tape boxes, but the sequence of programs from one channel to another or one tape to another is not always clear.

Transmission Data: Digital files created 8/2013 (48 kHz/24-bit) - N1_Side_1_Ch_A.wav, N1_Side_2_Ch_A.wav, N1_Side_1_Ch_B.wav, N1_Side_2_Ch_B.wav; N2_Side_1_Ch_A.wav, N2_Side_2_Ch_A.wav, N2_Side_1_Ch_B.wav, N2_Side_2_Ch_B.wav; N3_Side_1_Ch_A.wav, N3_Side_2_Ch_A.wav, N3_Side_1_Ch_B.wav, N3_Side_2_Ch_B.wav; N4_Side_1_Ch_A.wav, N4_Side_2_Ch_A.wav, N4_Side_1_Ch_B.wav, N4_Side_2_Ch_B.wav
