Biographical NoteReturn to Top
William Sturman was born in Poland in 1908. His father settled in Everett, Washington and opened a shoe store, and later on his older brother, who had gone to Brazil, lent the father enough money to bring Mr. Sturman and his mother to the United States.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Isabel Stusser on 5 Sep 1985; transcript.
William Sturman recounts his life in Everett, Wash., where he has spent most of his life. He describes his impressions of the United States as a young boy travelling across the country in a train. He describes his father's establishment of a business. He relates his impressions of growing up in a small Jewish community and tells of his marriage and raising a family. Mr. Sturman reminisces about Jewish life in Everett, about the Montefiore synagogue and the congregation's history. He points to the 1920s as the most flourishing time for the congregation. He shares his feelings concerning the diminishment of the congregation and concludes that small town life is not conducive to furthering Jewish life. He briefly discusses the congregation's attempt to interest a new group of Jews in the synagogue.

Melvin Sturman, son of the William Sturmans, was the first youth in Washington state to win the "Ner Tamid" award for Jewish Boy Scouts. Clippings show Kosher cooking.
