Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Marvin Melville (b. 1935), is an internationally decorated and respected skier. He skied for the Granite High School, University of Utah, 1958 United States Olympic Alpine, and 1960 International Ski Federation (FIS) ski teams. In 1959, Marvin Melville became the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) champion in downhill, slalom and combined ski events. After retiring from competition, he served a tour in the Army and then opened a ski school for young racers. Melville coached the 1964 Women's Olympic Ski Team and the University of Utah Ski Team. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

The Melville family's cabin pack trip in the Tetons. The filmed activities are horseback riding, setting up camp, and cooking. There are also several scenic views shown along the way.

Super 8mm film
This film contains footage of the Melville family's trip to Europe. They arrive at London's Gatwick Airport and go sightseeing and visit the Middle Tower LDS Church. Then they travel to Dover, England and take the Hoverlloyd Ferry to France and rent a van to tour the continent with. There are several scenic views from their drive through the mountains and from a gondola ride. The last destination in this film was Cortina d'Ampezzo where Marvin had previously competed in the Winter Olympics. Continued in reel 6.

Continued from reel 5: The Melville family travels to Germany where they visit the Volks Kunst Museum. The next scene is a close up of a map of Innsbruck, Austria where the Melville children climb the steps leading from the Olympic rings and the torch site. The Melville family visits the Olympia station and the Wasserepilele, which is a beautiful garden with waterfalls and water fountains. Next the Melville family hikes to a cabin in Bergalm where they play in the fields together. There are scenic views from their hike and from the fields that they play in. Continued in reel 7.

Continued from reel 6: The Melville family visits the home in Austria where The Sound Of Music was filmed. They then visit the Wimbledon Club in Sweden and return to Gatwick Airport where the Melville girls are seen wearing their Austrian dresses.

The Melville family's trips to California: 1955 trip: The Melville children play on the beach and in the ocean, then the entire family goes to Sea World where they see seals, dolphins, and orcas (killer whales). They return to the beach and then visit the grave of James Alexander Melville (1870-1942) as well as many other ancestors' graves. 1977 trip: The Melville family goes to the beach and visits Disneyland, Universal Studios and Universal City.

9 July 4th parades, Sawtooth National Forest

4th of July street parades from 1975 thru 1979. The parades from 1975 and 1977 include the East Millcreek Parade, and the Dimple Dell Parade, which replaces the floats with horses. In 1978 the Melville family goes to the East Millcreek Parade. After the parade, the family leaves for Bolboa Island. In 1979 the Melville family attends the Miss Sandy Parade. At the end of this film there is some footage of the Melville's trip to Sawtooth National Forest where they camp, cook, and go for hikes.

The Melville's family trip to Baja Mexico where the men go ocean fishing and the family goes snorkling from the beach. There are also several scenic views from the boat that the men fish from.

The Melville children participating in the Youth Conference Pioneer Trek hosted by Brigham Young University (BYU). The young adults get onto and off of a bus, set up their covered wagons, walk, cook, and camp. The trail that they follow is the same trail that the early Mormon Pioneers used to make their way to Utah.

Baja, Mexico (January 1979): The Melville family goes snorkeling from the beach, plays tennis, swims in the ocean, and plays on the beach. There are also scenic views of the coastline, and several shots of pelicans fishing nearby. Backpacking trip to Hergen (August 1979) Images of the family hiking, playing in a pond, boating, swimming, and lying out in the sun.

In Hawaii the Melville family is seen going to the beach and playing in the ocean, fishing, and parasailing. They also visit the L.D.S Temple, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and the Sea Life Park. The Melville women take Hula dancing lessons and then the family goes to the Hanauma Bay Beach where they play in the ocean and go snorkeling. The Melville's trip to the Babine River consists of footage of the family fishing on a motorboat.

Marvin Melville's two daughters, Marti and Shari, on their wedding days: Marti and her fiance, Ron, are married at Temple Square in March of 1980. The footage of the wedding day consists of the reception and the wedding diner. Shari and her fiance, Brent, are married at Temple Square in September of 1980. The footage of the wedding also consists of the reception and wedding diner.

The Melville family reunion in Fillmore, Utah: The extended family swims and has a picnic. The entire family also goes to visit George Crane's home, the cemetary where many relatives are buried, the "Old State House" Museum, Alexander Melville's first home, and James Andrew Melville's home. This film also contains footage of the Melville's trip to Flaming Gorge where they Ride ATV's, and go fishing on a boat.
