Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in Seattle in 1910, Florence (Freddie) Myers lived most of her childhood, youth, and early years of her marriage in the Central Area of Seattle. At the time of her birth, Freddie's parents, Wolf and Nessie Warshal, lived next door to her mother's parents on 20th and Union. When she was a young child, the family moved to be closer to synagogues and to give their children a Jewish education. Mrs. Myers' parents belonged to Herzl synagogue, at that time orthodox and located at 15th and Fir, with Rabbi Shapiro as its rabbi. The Warshal family also joined Temple de Hirsch because it was the only synagogue to offer a Sunday school. When Herzl synagogue moved to 20th and Spruce and became Conservative, the family became members there.

Scope and Content: Florence Myers relates her memories of Jewish life during the period 1910-1942, and mentions the names of the numerous Jewish neighbors and Jewish businesses in the area. The Jewish children in the area all grew up together, attending first Washington School and later Garfield High School, and socialized almost exclusively with other Jewish children. Jewish families had their friends living close by; card playing was a favorite pastime. However, each segment of the Jewish community socialized within its own group, with little interaction between them. Freddie Myers recalls Yesler Way on Saturday nights as a 'Jewish mall,' where Jewish kids congregated. Freddie met her future husband, Julius at the movies on 18th and Yesler. From 1937-1942 Freddie and her husband lived at 26th and E. Alder, with other Jewish families nearby. As they prospered, they moved away from the area. Freddie Myers expresses warm feelings about growing up in the Jewish neighborhood that constituted a large part of the Central Area.
