Biographical NoteReturn to Top
LeEtta King's parents brought her to Wasington when they emigrated from Illinois to the Roslyn, Washington coal fields as strikebreakers. Her parents were unsuccessful as homesteaders; they died leaving four children to be raised by Mr. Jackson, a friend of her mother's. LeEtta received her musical training early. She was raised in Yakima, Washington, but moved to Seattle at the age of seventeen. She worked for a black lawyer, then worked for the Federal government gathering geographic information for a World War I project. LeEtta married and had one son. After her husband died, she supported herself as a music teacher.

Scope and Content: Clippings, sheet music, copies from a scrapbook.
Also includes the magazines, "The Crisis" by Frank Watts, and "The Black Man" edited by Marcus Garvey.

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview covering 1893-1950 and conducted by Erika Gottfried, March 4 and 11, 1976.
The interview on 3/4/76 includes: her parents' emigration from Illinois to Washington as strikebreakers, their unsuccessful attempt at homesteading, the subsequent orphaning of their four children, her childhood in Yakima, being brought up by her mother's friend, Mr. Jackson, her early musical training, her move to Seattle at age 17, working for a black lawyer, her trip to California, working for the Federal Government gathering geographic information for a World War I project, her musical engagements in Seattle, how she met her husband, her marriage, and the birth of her son.
The interview on 3/11/76 includes: early married life, the 1920's, the Depression, working at W.P.A. jobs, her social life, her husband's death, and teaching piano for a living.
