Historical NoteReturn to Top

John Wesley Johnson (1836-1898) and his family were Oregon pioneers, arriving in Marysville, Oregon in 1850 President, 1876-1893

cite (Sheldon)

He was a graduate of Yale University, and afterwards returned to Oregon to work in education. He worked as a teacher at McMinnville College (now Linfield College) from 1863â€"1867, and also served as President of the college from 1864 until 1867. Next, he served as principal at Portland High School until 1873 (Sheldon.......)

In 1873, Johnson traveled to Eugene, Oregon to teach Latin at the University of Oregon, and in 1876, he was chosen to be the first President of the university. His tenure as president lasted until 1893.

"In addition to teaching Greek and Latin, his duties as president also included those of registrar, business officer, provost, dean of students, and secretary. In his seventeen years as president he urged Oregonians to overcome their suspicion of higher education and focused his energies on quality and essentials, building a solid base for the future" (President's).

While president, Johnson oversaw the creation of new buildings: Villard Hall in 1886; a new dormitory (which is now Friendly Hall) in 1893.

In 1915, a new administration building was built on campus; in 1918, that building was named after President Johnson, and is still known as Johnson Hall.
