The Susan Aldrich-Markham Photographs consist of color slides created and assembled by Aldrich-Markham in her work as a Field Crops Extension Agent with the Oregon State University Extension Service in Crook, Tillamook, and Yamhill Counties. The images were used for weed and native plant identification and illustrate agricultural methods and techniques for weed control, seed crops, and pasture management. Susan Aldrich-Markham served as an Extension Agent from 1984 until her retirement in 2008.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Susan Aldrich-Markham served as a Field Crops Extension Agent for the Oregon State University Extension Service from 1984 until her retirement in 2008. Aldrich-Markham was based in Crook, Tillamook, and Yamhill Counties during her career and specialized in weed identification, planting of nurse crops for erosion control, and native plants. She worked closely with grass seed farmers and the Master Gardener program.

Susan Aldrich-Markham earned a B.A. in Psychology from Pomona College in 1969 and completed post-baccalaureate studies at Oregon State University for a B.S. (1973) and M.Ag. (1978) degrees in Crop Science.

The Susan Aldrich-Markham Photographs consist of color slides taken and assembled by Aldrich-Markham in her work as a Field Crops Extension Agent. The images were used in slide presentations and Extension publications for weed and native plant identification. The images also illustrate agricultural methods and techniques such as companion planting, sprayer maintenance, roadside grass seeding, nurse crop planting, conservation, and pasture management. Most of the farms and farming operations depicted in the photographs are identified by name. Images of a tour of Polk County, a visit to the Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maiz and Trigo (CIMMYT) research facility in Mexico, and a national meeting of county agricultural agents are also part of the collection.

The collection includes 4083 slides that are arranged in general topics; many of the images are annotated with detailed descriptions. Most of the images were taken by Aldrich-Markham. Slides by Extension Agent L.C. Burrill and others are also included.

The photographs were transferred to the Special Collections & Archives Research Center by the Yamhill County Extension Office in 2012.
