Theodosia Young was the daughter of Zoe Dusanne, the well-known African-American gallery owner of Seattle, Washington. Zoe Dusanne was born in 1880 in Kansas to a hairdresser and a self-taught stonemason. Growing up in Colorado and Iowa, Zoe later attended Oberlin College and the University of Illinois before moving to Seattle in 1911. By 1928, Zoe had moved to New York City, where she met many artists and fostered a lifelong interest in contemporary art. Returning to Seattle in 1942, she established a gallery in her home on Lakeview Place in 1950, creating one of the first privately owned modern-art galleries in Seattle. In her Lakeview place gallery, Dusanne exhibited the work of many prominent Northwest artists as well as many New York and international artists. Zoe stayed in contact throughout her life with many of the artists she met in New York and Seattle. When freeway construction claimed her home in 1959, she moved her gallery to 532 Broadway East. In 1964, Zoe Dusanne retired due to illness and later died in Seattle in 1972.

Dusanne's daughter, Theodosia Young was born in 1909 when Zoe and her first husband George Young were living in Omaha, Nebraska. After Zoe separated from George, Theodosia and her mother moved to Seattle where Theodosia began attending Holy Names Academy. Theodosia studied theater and dance at the Cornish School and performed in New York and New England in the 1930s. From 1940 to 1945, while living in New York, Theodosia was married to Walter Snow. She returned to Seattle in 1950. Because of her mother's prominence in the city as an art exhibitor and dealer, Theodosia became friends with a number of important local Northwest artists. Set on honoring her mother's contribution to the contemporary art world and to the city of Seattle, Theodosia Young worked with Master's student Patricia Svoboda to create a tribute honoring Zoe Dusanne at the Seattle Art Museum in 1977. Theodosia Young died in Seattle on February 13, 1999.

Photographs of the well-known African-American Seattle art gallery owner Zoe Dusanne and her daughter, Theodosia Young. Photographs include portraits of artist friends and acquaintances, Dusanne's Lakeview gallery, and images from Zoe Dusanne's 1977 tribute at the Seattle Art Museum. The collection also includes Christmas cards, other correspondence from friends and artists, and a series of tintypes and carte-de-visite photographs, possibly collected by Zoe Dusanne or Theodosia Young.

Theodosia Young was the daughter of Zoe Dusanne, the well-known African-American gallery owner of Seattle, Washington. She was born in 1909, and attended the Holy Names Academy in Seattle as a child. Later, Theodosia studied theater and dance at the Cornish School and performed in New York and New England in the 1930s. Because of her mother's prominence in the city as an art exhibitor and dealer, Theodosia became friends with a number of important local Northwest artists.

		Gatherings at Theodosia's Home These photographs depict social events held at Theodosia Young's home in the 1960s-1970s. Although many of the individuals are unknown, the photographs depict artwork in Theodosia's home, many of which were originally displayed in Zoe Dusanne's gallery in the 1950s.

		Seattle Art Museum Tribute In 1977, with the help of Theodosia Young and graduate student Patricia Svoboda, the Seattle Art Museum created a tribute exhibition honoring Zoe Dusanne's contribution to the Seattle arts community. The exhibit featured photographs of Zoe as well as artwork originally displayed in Dusanne's Lakeview gallery.
