S.B. Dunn was a photographer in the Yukon Territory and Alaska region in the late 1890's.
Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
On August 16, 1896 George Carmack and his two Indian brothers-in-law struck gold in the Klondike. By the winter of 1897, this news reached the United States and thousands made ready to leave their homes in the spring to seek their fortunes in the north. Between 1897 and 1899 approximately 100,000 people left the mainland United States to travel up to the Yukon. Of that number, less than half actually made it to the gold fields due to hazardous weather and rough terrain. There were two ways to the gold fields: up the Yukon by boat or up the inside passage to Chilkoot Trail and White Pass. White Pass was the longer of the two, but nearly a thousand feet lower than the alternative and a much more gradual incline.
