Biographical NoteReturn to Top

LeRoy Eugene Cowles was born on April 13, 1880 in Chester, Utah. He received his Ph.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Chicago in 1910 and 1913. Cowles initially came to the University of Utah in 1914 as assistant professor in the Department of Education. He later became associate professor, full professor, and department head. He also served as first dean of the lower division and dean of the School of Education. Cowles was President of the University of Utah from 1941 to 1946. He died on January 2, 1957.

This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, and reports relating to general University administration. A significant portion of the materials concerns University involvement in World War II. Included are some personal papers including copies of his thesis and dissertation, as well as verse, prose, speeches, and articles. The last three boxes (30,31,32) contain personal writings authored by President Cowles.
