Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Collection includes microfilm of miscellaneous records of the U.S. Customs House at the Port of Astoria, Oregon, 1848-1868, with papers of employees and steamboats. Also included is a bound volume containing typescript copies of data and reports relating to steamboats, compiled from records of the collectors of customs in Astoria and Portland. The records include a list of steamboats registered with U.S. Customs in Astoria from 1851-1911, and Portland from 1870 to 1939; these records give the date of registration, the name of the steamer, the registered owner, the date and place of construction, the master, and sometimes other details. Records also include steamboat sales registered in Astoria from 1851-1890 and Portland from 1870-1927. The volume also includes copies of reports by supervising steamboat inspectors for the 1st District from 1863-1910, and for the District of Portland from 1911-1939. These reports provide inspection statistics and information on steamboat accidents and incidents.
