David Smith Monson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 20 June 1945. He attended local public schools and received his B.S. from the University of Utah in 1970. He was a sergeant in the Utah Air National Guard 1967 to 1973 and a Utah state auditor from 1973 to 1976. Monson served as lieutenant governor of Utah from 1977 to 1984 and was elected to the Ninety-ninth Congress (January 3, 1985-January 3, 1987).
