Biographical NoteReturn to Top

David Hyman and his wife Ruth are members of the Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath congregation.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Bikur Cholim Jewish congregation was founded in 1891. Bikur Cholim's first synagogue was a remodeled private residence at 14th Avenue and Washington street. In 1909, property was purchased to build a synagogue at 17th avenue and Yesler way. It was dedicated in 1915 and served as Bikur Cholim's home for 60 years.

The congregation merged with Congregation Machzikay Hadath in 1971, becoming Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath, or BCHM. Bikur Cholim moved to Seward Park, a chapel at 12th street and Spruce street., after purchasing property there in 1966. The building was not dedicated until 1972. On January 22, 1972, Congregation Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath celebrated the official opening of its newly constructed Seward Park building.

In 1991, Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath celebrated its centennial. Today, BCHM is the largest Ashkenazic Jewish Orthodox synagogue in the greater Seattle area with nearly 300 member families.
