Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jacob Lighter was born in Nova Scotia in 1900 and moved to Seattle in 1917. After becoming a Certified Public Accountant, he helped form the accounting firm Friedman and Lighter in 1925. Active in many Jewish organizations, his major interest was Hillel. He was instrumental in establishing the Foundation at University of Washington and played an important role in the building of the Hillel House on campus. He and Esther Marshin (1904-1984) married in 1927. He died in 1950.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview, conducted by M. Kaplan and Helen Runstein, 6/14/74.

Reminisces about the activities of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid society, the Hebrew Ladies Free Loan Society, Jewish Consumptive Relief society; husband's (Jacob Lighter) family history, his business (Friedman and Lighter, an accounting firm) and organizational activities (Hillel House, UW chapter of B'nai B'rith). Covers years 1900-1970.
