Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

In 1926 construction began on the Suzzallo library. The second and third wings were added in 1935 and 1963. In 1988, Washington State Legislature approved funding for the fourth wing, the Allen library. Designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes associates of New York, it was named after Kenneth S. Allen, Associate Director of Libraries 1960 to 1982. An example of the Collegiate Gothic architectural style, the Allen Library provided shelving for over 1,056,000 volumes and was completed in 1990.
