Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dr. Matthew Caldwell was from or practiced in Umpqua, Oregon. According to Accession No. 2005-011, The History of the Physicians of Jackson County Past and Present, he practiced in Phoenix, OR. He graduated from the Ohio Medical College, March 1, 1848. The Obituary Index Collection 2005-017 states that Dr. Caldwell was born in 1824 and died in 1874. The Edith McCracken Guide to the History of Jackson County Physicians Records (Accession # 2005-011) says that for 8 years after graduation (c. 1848-1856) he worked as a doctor for steamship lines on the China run from San Francisco. Caldwell moved to a practice in Phoenix, OR until retirement due to ill health (1864). He moved to Wagner Soda Springs where he died. He married Mary Jane McCormick and had a daughter, Mrs. Lily D. Blackwood still living in Phoenix at the time of writing.

The notebook contains Caldwell's class notes from the Ohio Medical College from 1847-1848, though there is no indication of what school he attended in the notebook. The pages are headed with the names of the instructors: "Prof.": [Loehe Locke ?], Lawson, Mussey, Harrison and Wright.

Arrangement

One 8' x 14' notebook in a small artifact box.

Custodial History

Dr. Mathew Caldwell, Umpqua, Oregon, created the notebook. Dr. Earl Canfield donated it to the UOMS Library in June 1942. It was kept in the Medical Museum Collection until May 2005 when archivist, Karen Peterson, accessioned it into the OHSU Historical Collections & Archives.
