Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James Blaine Yule was born on February 21, 1884. He studied engineering at the University of Montana in Missoula, though he returned to the family farm before graduating. Yule began working for the Forest Service in 1911 as a forest ranger and transferred to the division of engineering in 1917. He pioneered the development of aerial photography and photogrammetry, both used to speed up forest mapping. Yule retired on September 1, 1947 as the Chief of Maps and Surveys in the engineering division of Forest Service Region One.

Yule and his wife Margaret had two daughters, Jamie and Valerie. Yule died on June 4th, 1957.

This collection contains a hand drawn map of the University of Montana campus dated Feb. 1, 1906, drawn by J.B. Yule for an engineering course at the University. The collection also contains photographs, correspondence, clippings and articles documenting Yule's work with the United States Forest Service and especially his involvement with the use of aerial photographs by the Forest Service in map-making activities.

Map gift of Jamie B. Yule and Valerie Y. Walther on July 16, 2001. Additional papers were a gift of Jamie B. Yule, 2002 and 2017.

This collection arrived at the Archives in several accessions. Because it is a small collection after the first arrangement additional materials were added into appropriate folders or into new folders placed at the end of the collection.
